Apokoronas's farm festival heads to Georgioupolis beach: July 24–30, 2026
The Municipality of Apokoronas is bringing its popular Agricultural August festival forward this year. Instead of its usual slot in August, the 2026 edition runs from July 24 to 30 at the Georgios Papadakis Park on the Georgioupolis beachfront.
What is Agricultural August?
Agricultural August is a long-standing annual event organised by the Apokoronas municipality to shine a spotlight on the area's farmers, food producers, and local businesses. The 2026 theme — "The Festival of the Cretan Land — I Support My Place — I Shop from My Place" — captures its core purpose: connecting residents and visitors directly with the people who grow and make the food and goods of the Apokoronas region.
Despite the shift in timing, the festival keeps its familiar name. The municipality says the move to July is purely for logistical reasons, and everything that makes the event special remains intact.
What's on during the week?
Every evening, visitors can enjoy live music and dance performances featuring local groups and cultural associations. During the day, children have their own creative activities to keep them engaged. And throughout the week, participating producers can sell their products — think olive oil, honey, cheeses, herbs, and handmade specialities — directly to the public from their stalls.
Why does it matter?
The municipality frames the festival as more than just a market. It argues that local government can be a genuine driver of regional development, and events like this one prove the point: producers get a high-visibility platform at peak tourist season, local culture gets celebrated, and money spent on the site stays in the community. For the many visitors who come to Georgioupolis in late July, it is also a rare chance to take home something genuinely made in Crete.
