Apokoronas council to review high-voltage power line study
The Apokoronas municipal council has called a special session for May 21, 2026, to hear and formally adopt the findings of a major research study on a proposed high-voltage electricity line that would run between Chania and Damastas along the northern coast of Crete.
What the study covers
The study was commissioned from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and its full title is "Environmental, Economic and Social Assessment of Route Options for a High-Voltage Energy Line (Chania–Damastas) in Northern Crete, and Investigation of Alternative Scenarios". It covers two phases of research and examines how different possible routes for the power line would affect the environment, the local economy and residents across the region.
The specific findings and the alternative scenarios examined have not been released publicly ahead of the session — the council meeting is where the full report will be presented for the first time.
Session details
- Date: May 21, 2026
- Time: 7:30 p.m.
- Location: Apokoronas Municipal Council chamber, Vrysses
- Format: In person, with live streaming on the municipality's YouTube channel
The session is open to the public. Anyone unable to attend in person can follow the debate live online.
Why it matters
High-voltage transmission infrastructure is a sensitive issue across Crete, where proposed corridors often cut through protected landscapes, agricultural land and residential areas. Depending on which route is ultimately chosen, the line could affect property, land use and the character of villages across Apokoronas. The council will be asked to formally accept the NTUA report at the session; any decisions about next steps would follow separately.
