Storm Warning for Apokoronas: Stay Away from Streams and Flood Crossings
Apokoronas municipality issued an urgent civil protection alert on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, as severe weather closes in on the Chania region. Authorities are asking everyone in the area — permanent residents and visitors alike — to take the warning seriously and adjust their plans accordingly.
What the forecast says
The Greek National Meteorological Service (EMY) is predicting a sharp deterioration in conditions from late Tuesday afternoon. Strong rain and thunderstorms are expected across much of the area, with the heaviest impact in coastal and maritime zones. Hail is also possible in places. On top of the rain, powerful north-easterly winds will affect the northern Aegean and the Chania district from Tuesday evening right through to the early hours of Thursday, October 15, 2026.
The key danger: stream crossings
The most urgent message from the municipality is simple: do not go near streams, rivers or riverbeds, and do not cross low-water fords — the flat, open sections of road where a route passes through a streambed. These crossings can look completely dry one moment and become a torrent within minutes during heavy rain. The rule applies no matter how urgent the reason for travel might seem.
The civil protection office puts it plainly: above everything else comes human life.
