Apokoronas on Highest Fire Alert: What You Must Know This Week
Apokoronas Municipality is on its highest fire alert this week. The local Civil Protection service has declared a Red Code — the most serious category of fire danger — covering four consecutive days at the height of summer.
Alert Period
- Wednesday, July 29, 2026
- Thursday, July 30, 2026
- Friday, July 31, 2026
- Saturday, August 1, 2026
The alert follows a forecast issued by Greece's General Secretariat for Civil Protection, which has rated the fire risk across the area as Very High (Category 4).
Who Is Affected
This applies to everyone in and around Apokoronas — residents, farmers, business owners, and visitors alike. The municipality has also placed a preventive ban on entering, passing through, or remaining in fire-sensitive areas. If you are planning to visit forests, scrubland, or rural areas during these days, do not go.
What Is Strictly Forbidden
During the alert period, the following activities are completely prohibited:
- Burning crop residues, grasslands, or pastures
- Any open fire outdoors, regardless of purpose — including religious ceremonies, cultural events, entertainment, and film productions
- Smoking near beehives
- Hot work that generates sparks, such as welding or metal cutting
- Using outdoor grills, barbecues, or any open-flame cooking equipment
- Releasing sky lanterns or balloons
- Setting off fireworks or pyrotechnics of any kind
Penalties for Breaking the Rules
The municipality is clear: non-compliance will result in serious administrative and criminal penalties. Enforcement is active during high-risk periods.
If You See a Fire
If you spot smoke or flames anywhere, call the fire service immediately:
- 199 — Fire Service (Greece)
- 112 — European Emergency Number
Give as precise a location as possible. Every second counts when a fire starts in dry summer conditions.
