Apokoronas beaches fully staffed and monitored from June 2
From June 2, 2026, professional lifeguard cover is in operation at all 17 of Apokoronas's award-winning beaches. The municipality has assembled a team and a fleet of rescue equipment to provide safety cover for the full summer season — for local residents and the many thousands of visitors who come to this stretch of northwestern Crete each year.
What is in place
The municipality has confirmed the following resources for the 2026 season:
- Lifeguards on duty: 20
- Speedboat operators: 2
- Supervisors: 1
- Watchtowers: 18, fully renovated
- Speedboats: 2 vessels, each 5.5 metres in length
- Jet skis: 2
- All-terrain vehicles: 3 quad bikes for beach patrol
What this means for swimmers
Anyone swimming at any of the 17 designated beaches can expect a qualified lifeguard in the tower and motorised backup — by sea and by land — if something goes wrong. The coverage runs across the entire coastline of Apokoronas that has received beach quality awards.
According to the municipality, the goal is to complete the season without any serious incidents, as has been the case in previous years.
