Apokoronas mourns firefighters who gave their lives in the flames
On July 30, 2026, Apokoronas Mayor Charalampos Koukianakis published an official statement paying tribute to firefighters who died while battling a wildfire. His message is one of grief — but also of urgent responsibility.
Heroes who ran toward the fire
In his statement, the Mayor describes the fallen firefighters as people who, at the very moment everyone else was trying to escape, ran in the opposite direction — toward danger — driven by selflessness, a sense of duty, and the sole purpose of saving lives, homes, and forests.
"That is how they lived, and that is how they left us — as heroes," he writes.
Koukianakis bows his head in deep respect before their sacrifice and expresses his most sincere condolences to the families and colleagues of the fallen. "Their pain is the pain of all of us," he says.
Not just another tragedy to be forgotten
The Mayor goes beyond words of mourning. He warns that the sacrifice of these firefighters must not become yet another tragic news item that disappears from public memory within days.
"It must become the voice of our conscience," he writes — a reminder that nature does not belong to us, but has been entrusted to us so that we may hand it on, alive and safe, to our children.
A shared duty to protect the environment
Koukianakis is clear that responsibility lies with everyone: the national government, local authorities, and every individual citizen. That responsibility means actively protecting the environment, refusing to look the other way, working to prevent fires, and respecting every tree, every mountain, and every patch of this land.
Because when a forest burns, it is not only the greenery that is lost — a piece of our collective soul goes with it. And when a firefighter dies to save that forest, a simple "thank you" is not enough.
What we owe them
"We owe it to them to change — to become more responsible, more aware, more human," the Mayor writes. That, he says, will be the most genuine tribute to those who gave their lives in service to all of us.
His statement closes: "Eternal be their memory. May their sacrifice be an undying beacon of responsibility, unity, and love for humanity and the environment."
