Storm Warning for Apokoronas: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Expected Through Saturday Night
The Municipality of Apokoronas has issued an urgent civil protection bulletin following an updated severe weather alert published on Friday, October 2, 2026, by Greece's National Meteorological Service (EMY). The European Emergency Number 112 has also been activated in connection with the warning.
What to expect
Heavy and at times very intense rainfall along with thunderstorms are forecast for Crete and particularly the Chania region. The dangerous conditions are expected to begin from late Friday afternoon and persist through the evening of Saturday, October 3, 2026, after which conditions are predicted to gradually improve.
What residents and visitors should do
The municipality is asking everyone present in Apokoronas — whether permanent residents or visitors — to take the following precautions:
- Limit all travel to what is absolutely necessary.
- If travel cannot be avoided, inform a family member or close friend of your intended destination and the route you plan to take.
- Stay well away from streams, rivers, and seasonal watercourses — even those that appear calm can become dangerous torrents within minutes during heavy rain.
- Do not attempt to cross Irish crossings (low-water road fords where a road meets a stream) under any circumstances, regardless of how shallow the water appears.
