Apokoronas to install beach access systems for people with mobility difficulties
The municipality of Apokoronas is adding two SeaTrac beach access systems to local beaches, giving people with mobility difficulties the ability to reach the sea on their own for the first time. The announcement was made on May 8, 2026.
What is SeaTrac?
SeaTrac is a certified mechanical beach access system that provides a guided path or ramp into the water, designed specifically for people who use wheelchairs or other mobility aids. Unlike portable beach wheelchairs that still require assistance, SeaTrac systems are built for independent use — meaning a person with a mobility difficulty can enter the sea without relying on others.
Who is affected?
The systems are intended for residents and visitors who, due to mobility difficulties, have had limited or no access to the sea at public beaches. The initiative removes a practical barrier that has long prevented equal access to a basic amenity for a significant number of people.
What we don't yet know
The municipal announcement does not specify which two beaches will receive the systems, nor does it give an installation or opening date. It is also not clear whether advance booking or registration will be required to use the equipment. Anyone seeking up-to-date information should contact the Apokoronas municipal authority directly.
