Apokoronas on Maximum Fire Alert for August 29
The Municipality of Apokoronas has issued a Category 5 wildfire danger warning for Saturday, August 29, 2026 — the highest level in the Greek civil protection system, signalling a state of full alarm. Scorching heat, bone-dry vegetation, and difficult wind conditions across the Chania region mean that even the smallest spark could trigger a catastrophic fire.
What is banned?
A strict ban is in force across the entire municipality for the whole of August 29. The following activities are explicitly prohibited:
- Burning crop residues, grasslands, or pastures
- Any use of open fire outdoors — for religious, cultural, entertainment, or film production purposes
- Smoking in beehives
- Hot work that generates sparks, such as welding or metal cutting
- Outdoor grilling or barbecuing using any fuel
- Releasing sky lanterns or hot-air balloons
- Using fireworks of any kind
Sensitive areas are closed
As part of the alert measures, a preventive ban on access to sensitive forest and natural areas is in force. No person or vehicle may enter, pass through, or remain in these zones. Violations carry serious administrative and criminal penalties.
If you see smoke or fire
Do not hesitate — call immediately:
- Fire Service: 199
- European Emergency Number: 112
The municipality's civil protection teams and equipment are on full standby. Officials stress that prevention on the most dangerous days depends on every single person — residents and tourists alike.
