Traffic and pedestrian rules in place for Agios Fanourios feast in Apokoronas on August 26–27

Summary

Chania Police has announced special traffic measures for the feast of Agios Fanourios church in Apokoronas municipality on August 26 and 27, 2026. Pedestrians are banned from the north coast highway and must instead follow a designated route through Megala Chorafia, Apteron, Stylos, Neo Chorio and the Agion Panton junction to reach the church's south entrance. Vehicles may not stop or park anywhere along the highway on either day, and increased police checks are planned.

Special rules for the Agios Fanourios feast: what you need to know for August 26–27

The feast of the church of Agios Fanourios in Apokoronas municipality draws large crowds every year — and this year, authorities are putting firm traffic measures in place to keep everyone safe. Because the church sits directly beside Crete's busy north coast highway, the Chania Police Directorate has drawn up a clear plan covering both pedestrians and drivers for the eve and the feast day itself.

Who is affected?

Anyone planning to attend the celebrations on August 26 (the eve) or August 27, 2026 (the feast day) — whether arriving on foot or by vehicle.

Pedestrians: a mandatory alternative route

Walking along the north coast highway is prohibited by law at any time — and the feast is no exception. Pedestrians will be directed along a designated alternative route through the surrounding villages:

  • Megala Chorafia → Apteron → Stylos → Neo Chorio → Agion Panton junction → Old National Road → south entrance of the church

Police officers will be stationed along the route to guide people safely.

Drivers: no stopping or parking on the highway

On both days, stopping and parking are strictly forbidden on the carriageway and hard shoulder of the north coast highway. Setting up market stalls or any other structure on the roadside verge is also prohibited. Police will carry out increased checks, and violations will be penalised.

How the decision was made

The measures were agreed at a coordination meeting held on August 18, 2026 at the Chania Police Directorate. Representatives from the Diocese of Kydonia and Apokoronas, the Agios Fanourios parish, Apokoronas municipality, and the relevant traffic police units all took part.

Key facts at a glance

  • Dates: August 26 and 27, 2026
  • Pedestrian route: Megala Chorafia – Apteron – Stylos – Neo Chorio – Agion Panton junction – Old National Road – south entrance of the church
  • Parking ban: entire north coast highway (carriageway and hard shoulder)
  • Stall ban: no structures of any kind on the highway verge
  • Enforcement: increased police presence on both days

Chania Police urges all festival-goers to use only the recommended alternative route and to follow instructions from officers on the ground.

Announcement from the General Regional Police Directorate of Crete – Emergency traffic measures for pedestrians and vehicles in view of the celebration at the Church of Agios Fanourios, Municipality of Apokoronas (on the Northern Road Axis of Crete)

Chania, 18 August 2026

ANNOUNCEMENT

The General Regional Police Directorate of Crete announces that the Chania Police Directorate will implement emergency traffic measures for pedestrians and vehicles in view of the celebration at the Church of Agios Fanourios of the Municipality of Apokoronas (on the Northern Road Axis of Crete – B.O.A.K.), for the purpose of preventing road accidents arising from the movement of pedestrians and the increased volume of vehicle traffic in the area.

Specifically, during a broad coordination meeting held today (18.08.2026) at the Chania Police Directorate, attended by representatives of the involved bodies (Holy Metropolis of Kydonia and Apokoronas, Church of Agios Fanourios of the Regional Unit of Chania, Municipality of Apokoronas, Traffic Police Department of Chania, Police Station of Apokoronas, and the 1st Traffic Police Station of B.O.A.K.), the following were decided:

• On 26 and 27 August, the eve and the feast day of the Church, and in application of the current legislation concerning pedestrian road behaviour — under which pedestrians are prohibited from walking on motorways and fast roads — the routing of pedestrian traffic will take place via an alternative road network. Specifically, pedestrians will be directed via the route: Megala Chorafia – Apteron – Stylos – Neo Chorio – Agion Panton junction – Old National Road, ending at the south entrance of the Church.

• Stopping and parking of vehicles on the carriageway of the B.O.A.K. is expressly prohibited (Article 38, paragraph 2, sub-paragraph ιβ' of Law 5209/2025), as is the placement of stalls or any other installation on its hard shoulder (Article 52, paragraph 1 of Law 5209/2025).

• Increased checks will be carried out to ensure smooth and safe traffic flow.

The Chania Police Directorate calls upon all those wishing to participate in the above religious celebration to follow exclusively the proposed alternative network and to comply with the instructions of police officers for their safe movement.
