Apokoronas Mayor at international island summit on Gavdos
Apokoronas Mayor Charalampos Koukianakis has temporarily stepped away from his desk — not for a holiday, but to represent the municipality at an international conference on Gavdos, the tiny island that sits at the southernmost tip of Europe.
The conference
From September 22 to 24, 2026, Gavdos is hosting the 3rd International SMART ISLANDS Conference, co-organised by the Municipality of Gavdos and the International Hellenic Association (IHA), under the auspices of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE). The central theme is the sustainable development of small and remote islands, examined through the real-world experience of local governments — a subject that touches Apokoronas closely, given its own connections to island life and coastal communities.
Mayor Koukianakis is attending as a conference delegate, contributing the municipality's perspective to the wider discussion.
Who is running things at home?
While the Mayor is on Gavdos, Deputy Mayor Ioannis Apostolakis is fully in charge of all mayoral duties. Residents who need to deal with the municipality on any matter during this period can direct their requests to him.
What does this mean for residents?
For day-to-day life in Apokoronas, nothing changes. The administration continues to function normally under the Deputy Mayor's oversight. Mayor Koukianakis is expected back in the office from Friday, September 25, 2026.
